This publication reproduces the proceedings of the VIIth Erenstein Colloquium, held by the European Institute of Public Administration (EIP A) at Erenstein Castle, Kerkrade, The Netherlands on 27-28 October 1989.
The discussions which took place in the course of the Colloquium focused on the external implications of the Community's 1992 Programme, with particular emphasis on relations with the members of the European Free Trade Association (EFT A) and the problems being dealt with within the framework of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
In the first session, the stage was set for discussions by way of a keynote address by
Mr Henning Christophersen, Vice-President of the Commission, and a presentation on 'The Points of View of Economic and Social Groupings' by Mr Antonio Neto da Silva, Chairman of the Section for External Relations of the Economic and Social Committee of the EC. The second session, dealing with 'EFTA and the EC's Internal Market', contained a presentation of major importance by Mr Per Kleppe, former Secretary-General of EFTA. The third session, which covered 'Multilateral Trade Issues and the Future of GATT', included a major presentation by Professor Jacques Pelkmans.
The publication also includes the comments made on the EC-EFTA negotiations by Dr Helen Wallace, Dr Victoria Curzon Price and Dr Hans Mayrzedt, as well as the comments made on the EC and GATT by Mr Roderick Abbott, Dr John Conybeare and Ms Sheila Page. Finally, the introductory and concluding remarks contributed by the editor of this publication, Dr Finn Laursen, Professor of International Politics at EIPA, are also reproduced.
