Description

One of the most 'successful' policies of the European Community is competition policy. There is now great interest in competition policy, especially on the part of policy-makers in East European countries which for the past few years have been in the process of opening up their economies and introducing market-based economic systems.
Therefore, the purpose of this book is to provide policy-makers, who need not necessarily be experts in competition policy, with a bird's-eye view of the rules on competition as they are applied in the EC. This book is intended to be used for quick reference and as a point of departure for more detailed analyses of particular competition concepts and problems.
Bearing in mind the complexity of issues with which policy-makers have to grapple in the emerging market economies of Eastern Europe, we have also sought to highlight the relationship between competition policy and trade policy, the GATT system and industrial policy.
In order to make this book accessible to non-experts, each aspect of competition policy is examined in a separate chapter and the text is, as far as possible, free of technical jargon.
